Snakes and ladders

When I was little we used to play ‘Snakes and ladders’ a lot - it was really good fun, apart from the snakes!

As part of Artwave Festival this year, the fabulous cinema and hang-outerie Lewes Depot is holding an open art exhibition on the theme of ‘Play’. I read the call for entries and thought I’d have a go! I was delighted this time last year when my piece (a lampwork glass bead bracelet) for their ‘Blue’ exhibition was accepted, but this time I wanted to dig out my paintbox and combine watercolour with glass.

I had an absolutely brilliant time making this piece! I’m no good at drawing but by golly I love to splash paint around, so I went to town with my ‘game board’ background which ended up as a riot of different colours and patterns. The snakes are made of my harlequin beads on sterling silver wire (yes, they even have forked silver tongues!), and the ladders were a painting, cutting and sticking job. The finishing touches were a couple of counters and a die from the local toy shop.

I had an absolute ball doing this! I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to muck about with paint again - when you’re a 3D artist you tend, of course, to focus on three dimensions rather than two, so the project of designing, painting and number-stamping the game board was new territory for me, rather.

I’m sad to say that my ‘snakes and ladders’ hasn’t made it into the exhibition, but I’m still thrilled with it. It’ll be hanging in the Let Fire Inspire workshop all through Artwave Festival - so if you’re in the neighbourhood on a Saturday or Sunday from August 17th do pop in and have a look!

#CraftBlogClub spring clean gift swap - chapter 2

I was so excited to have a lovely box delivered to the Let Fire Inspire workshop last week… but couldn’t remember ordering anything from anybody.

The gorgeous cat sticky tape made me think of Ceinwyn - a cat I’ve got to know a bit on Twitter over the last year - and lo and behold when I turned the box over there was the label for Perfidious Jewellery - which is exactly where Ceinwyn hangs out.

The penny dropped. This was my #CraftBlogClub spring clean gift!

To be honest I hadn’t had a great week - and so I saved up the parcel-opening until Sunday afternoon, when I had the house to myself. Big cup of tea at my side, and in I went….

I was - am - overwhelmed! The lovely Lisa has sent me a huge variety of beads and jewellery-making findings - there are lots of beads (glass, shell, pearlised, semi-precious, metal) and jewellery components galore. Not only that, but she’d made me a lovely pair of skull earrings and a gorgeous pin incorporating my favourite greens and bluey greens.

Actually I’m just going to go ahead and paste the message I sent to Lisa the minute after I’d stopped drooling over the very generous stash:

Hi Lisa! Well, when I saw so many of Ceinwyn's friends and relations wrapped stickytapewise round my #CraftBlogClub parcel I knew who it was from even before I saw the Perfidious Jewellery label! And I just don't know what to say - what an absolutely smashing haul - it's every bead enthusiast and jewellery maker's dream! I've got glass beads, pearly beads, goldstone beads, semi-precious beads, mother-of-pearl beads, crystal beads, silver beads *pauses for breath* charm pin findings, ring findings, chains, eye pins..... AAAAND two beautiful, beautiful ready-to-wear items! The charm pin is in exactly my colours - but you know that! - and I'm beyond delighted with the earrings! I love what you do with skulls, but hadn't thought that skulls were 'my' kind of thing - well how jolly wrong I was, because I'm wearing the earrings right now and they're very, very me! I can't wait to get started crafting with this bumper stash - thank you so, so much - it's given me such a boost, and I'm beyond thrilled. Thank you so much! Rebecca x PS Amazeballs. Seriously. Thank you. xxx

I’ll be following this post up with one showing you what I’ve been busy making out of this stash!
