Weekend warrioring

One of the joys of self-employment is that I can choose when to be in the workshop - and as it's been a very busy start to the year I thought I'd sneak a morning in 'at work' to get my latest Etsy order ready for dispatch, and to sort out the glorious beads made yesterday by my two half-day course students Maria and Gill. While I'm at it I've been prepping some glass ready for one-to-one all-day sessions on Thursday and Saturday.

Radio 4 and an endless supply of tea have made this the perfect Sunday morning! Shhh - it doesn't even feel like work....

The nitty gritty is part and parcel

It's not every day I get to be creative at the torch flame - today and yesterday, for instance, I've been busy 'ending*' rods of glass, as well as getting on top of sorting out some of my scrag ends of rods.

The ideal scenario would of course be to join a too-short-to-use end of glass rod straight on to the next rod of the same colour as I go along, so as not to waste any. In reality of course, I don't do this, preferring instead to put the scrag end to one side and picking up a new rod when one runs out. And oh boy, what a lot of scrag ends I've had to deal with!

Still, after several hours at the flame, I've now got a whole new stack of 'new from old' glass rods - which I can't wait to use next time I'm having a beadmaking session! Which, in all likelihood, will be tomorrow - and I'm looking forward to it already.

*ending is what I do in preparation for every making session, and every course. Cut ends of glass like to spit and splutter and bubble and boil, so to make my life - and my students' lives! - easier, I always round off the ends of my glass rods in the torch flame in advance. This minimises the risk of thermal shock, and also saves some bother!
