Let fire inspire

Captivated by the magic of working with glass, Rebecca Weddell creates beautiful and unique lampwork beads and offers a range of beadmaking courses.

What's what and whose is whose

One of the most difficult things my course students encounter is deciding on which colour of glass to use out of the selection of 14+ rods they get to choose from! Now there's absolutely nothing I can do to help them with that little dilemma, but what I do like to do is to keep a running log of what beads they've made as the course progresses, so that I can answer questions like 'What colours did I use for my spotty bead?' or 'Was the one before last aqua or teal?'.

This way I have the answer at my fingertips! Having a list is particularly important when I have more than one student at a time. Everyone's beads go into specific sections of the kiln, so I know whose is whose, and I have never (in over fourteen years!) mixed anybody's beads up with anybody else's.

It also ensures that when I send the beads off to my students the day after their course, after they've been kiln-annealed for lasting strength, I string them in the order in which they were made - which naturally is very helpful in showing their progress!

Pictured is a list of the beads Clare made with me today, in the order in which she made them. Sorted!
