Secret Santa - shh!
Since a couple of months ago I have been a regular visitor to the #CraftBlogClub hashtag hour on Twitter, which is every Tuesday evening between 8pm and 9pm GMT. What I love about it is that it’s a non-promotional hour - participants drop in to say hi and have a chat about all things ‘craft’, rather than it being all about the ‘sell, sell, sell'.
Each week has a theme - recent topics have included mental health, do we get more crafty in autumn and winter, and preparing for Christmas….
…and speaking of Christmas (there, I’ve said it!) #CraftBlogClub’s annual Secret Santa is already on the boil! Last week, participants were e-mailed the identity of their Secret Santa gift recipient, and since then I suspect I’m not the only busy elf who’s been digging around on their Secret Santee’s Twitterfeed and reading blog post after blog post on their websites to find out more about that person!
What sort of things do they like?
What do they wear?
What’s their craft? Are they involved in several?
What’s their favourite thing to do?
What’s their favourite colour, or art medium?
Is what they do a good ‘fit’ with what I do - or should I go off-piste and make something using MY craft that would be helpful to them in THEIR craft?
So many ideas! And I’ve been very much enjoying the research - it’s opened up my eyes to all sorts of things and got me really thinking outside the box (if you’ll pardon the cliche!).
Over the next days and weeks I’m going to be continuing my homework in order to focus my ideas more keenly - although I think I’m heading in a particular direction already….!
Three things I’ve learned so far:
Commissions (because if I make something that is a ‘me’ thing for this person, that’s essentially a commission) where the recipient has no input at all in what they’re 'commissioning’, are a big challenge!
Thinking outside the box (that cliche again!) is proving to be very good for me! I’ve been very under the weather for nearly a week, and this afternoon I felt bright enough to do some proper ‘digging’ in terms of research, including some fact-finding on something I don’t know anything about. Firstly I’ve found that to be very inspiring, and secondly it’s lifted me out of my sighy germ-filled fug.
The real-life social side of social media is absolutely out there and fabulous. I’d had a horrid experience on a certain social media platform some years ago which put me off the concept altogether for a very long time. In early 2018 though I girded my loins and rejuvenated my little-used-from-years-ago Twitter account. Many hashtag hours and a lot of inspiration later - well, here I still am, and I’ve met some absolutely brilliant Tweeps along the way!
Thank you #CraftBlogClub for making me so welcome - and I’m looking forward to posting a festive something to my Secret Santee on the deadline of December 18!
I’ll be blogging more about the story of this Secret Santa journey early in the new year - any sooner than that and I’d be giving the game away……
